Calcium for horses
Calcium is a mineral that, among other things, is part of the horse's bones, teeth and muscle function.
Calcium and phosphorus must be fed in the right relationship to each other, as an imbalance in the feed state can be harmful to the horse. Suitable ratio for Calcium:Phosphorus is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1. Especially important for pregnant, lactating, young or growing horses.
Calcium is part of the important calcium/phosphorus ratio and should always be fed in the right relationship to each other. Suitable Ca:P ratio is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1.
The importance of calcium
Calcium is a macromineral which is mainly found in the skeleton, but which is of great importance for the whole horse.
- The structure of the skeleton
- The muscles' ability to perform work
- The cells' energy metabolism
- Coagulation ability of the blood
Lack of calcium
Lack of calcium primarily affects the skeleton and can cause problems such as osteoporosis. In young growing horses, a calcium deficiency can cause the skeleton not to develop correctly and can give rise to future skeletal and joint problems. Calcium deficiency can also lead to the motor nerves becoming overexcited and causing cramps in the muscles.
The maintenance requirement for an adult horse is 4 g per 100 kg body weight per day. Pregnant and lactating mares, as well as growing horses have a greater need.
When is calcium recommended?
When the forage does not contain enough calcium or when the Ca:P ratio needs to be adjusted.
Oh withdrawal time
In the event of a lack of calcium in the feed state.
