Phosphorus for the horse's skeleton and energy

Phosphorus is a mineral that is found, among other things, in bones, teeth and that is part of energy conversion.

It is important that calcium and phosphorus are fed in the right relationship with each other, as an imbalance in the forage state can be harmful to the horse. The appropriate ratio between Calcium : Phosphorus is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1.

Especially important for pregnant, lactating, young or growing horses.

Phosphorus is part of the important calcium/phosphorus ratio and should always be fed in the right relationship to each other. Suitable Ca:P ratio is between 1.2:1 and 1.8:1.

      The importance of phosphorus
      • Phosphorus is a macromineral that is mainly stored in the skeleton and it has great importance for the entire horse and its development.
      • The structure of the skeleton
      • The muscles' ability to perform work
      • The cells' energy metabolism
      • The teeth
      Lack of phosphorus

Lack of phosphorus can lead to osteoporosis and if the lack lasts for a longer period, it can also cause reduced appetite, growth and fertility.

The maintenance requirement for an adult horse is 2.8 g per 100 kg body weight per day. Pregnant and lactating mares, as well as growing horses have a greater need.

      When is phosphorus recommended?

When the forage does not contain enough phosphorus or when the Ca:P ratio needs to be adjusted.

      0h withdrawal time

If there is a lack of phosphorus in the feed ration.
